I am an Associate Professor of Spanish and Linguistics in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Wichita State University. I received a Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin and completed my M.A. in Spanish at Sacramento State University. My research addresses the social and political aspects of Spanish in the U.S. In particular, I am interested in identity and ideology in Spanish heritage language learning, family language policy and language maintenance in Latino families, language and Latino health, and community-based language education.
At Wichita State, I teach Spanish language and linguistics courses, and I currently serve as the Spanish Division Director. I also lead an organization called Alce su voz that addresses language barriers in healthcare and supports health equity for Spanish-speaking Latinxs in Kansas.
